    Default Tone, gear and fingers

Have been enjoying a new discovery in the playing of Ronnie Earl, and came across this in a recent interview. His amazing tone and its variety in his playing is what caught my ear, so I was surprised to read this in an interview:

(BDH) Let’s talk a bit about your guitars and such.

(RE) I’m not an equipment person in the least. I’ve always used my old Fender Stratocaster, and I have a couple of new ones. I used to play my fiesta red Strat most of the time, but now I change around. I use old Super Reverbs. I have four, but I only use one live. And that’s it. Nothing between them, no pedals, no nothing.

Gear: Epiphone Sheraton II, Epiphone Wildkat, Epiphone Emperor Joe Pass, Fender MIM Strat, Tacoma DR-14, Johnson JR-200 resonator; Fender Super Champ XD amp

I have to check this Ronnie guy out, never heard him. But almost invariably when I instantly like someone's guitar sound, I find out that it was pretty much straight-to amp deal. Angus, Cobain, Duffy, loads of examples. That is one reason I use FX usually pretty much only after-the fact in recordings.
