This escaped me too. I sold my 1044 and use Easy Drummer with Cubase on my computer. Much easier to do. Check the Zoom forum and you might find an answer.
I have recently bought a 2nd hand Zoom 1044. Composing the rhythm song is a bit cumbersome, but i am coping OK. I have noticed that the drum pads are live/active when recording other tracks, but i haven't been able to able find a way to capture them. Does anyone know of a way to record live pad performance independent to the rhythm song.

Ha! Tele-ish now inbound.
I think you may need an external MIDI recorded/sequencer. I dunno - I also went the EZDrummer route long ago.
