Default Help me ID this old Epiphone? (or is it Epi at all?)

An old timer showed me this guitar and swears it is an old epiphone. It easily could be, but there is no name on the guitar. There was something at one time, and you can see where it was taken off. But it was a plastic name plate or something, not the inlay we are used to. Still, while looking on the net I saw some real Epiphones (eg the VOLPE model) that used these plastic onlays. Anyway, the wood is beautiful, the pickguard interesting. Not a word inside the guitar or out now, tho I could not see perfectly through the F hole. The single pickup is a black soapbar type with 6 screws, not a newer style humbucker. Help. See photos here:

I can see only one photo of the back.

It it were me, I'd put the question out to the Epiphone forum at MyLesPaul.com. A few there can be snooty, but several people are quite knowlegeable.

Is this an attempt to get us to sign up for snapfish? If so, I'll ban you faster than you can say licketysplit! ha!
