You can do that with a USB interface into your computer too. You plug your guitar into the interface. No mics to pick up noise. Then you can play around with the recorded sound in your computer once it is in there. Or if you want something portable, you can get an iRig or similar for you iPhone (if you have one) and get the app. Like everything, there is an app for that!
