Question How to select a good briefcase for pedalboard?

I have got a few pedals now, and collected (!) a range of suitable briefcases for the purpose of making a briefcase pedalboard.

What works well in terms of depth, width, etc?

    What hasn't worked for you?

I have the vintage look covered. One of these days I may travel with one as a carry-on to see the looks I get -think dark avocado green American Tourister! Still solid though...

I've never used the case itself for a pedal board. Instead I cut a piece of 3/8" ply to fit inside the case and then add pedals to the board since screws will attach to the wood just fine, and I don't have to try to separate the case halves to use it properly. This way I also have enough room in the case for the guitar cables and lyric book. I've been able to get nice suitcases at Desert Industries, Goodwill and Salvation Army for $5 or less.
