The Ventures always were my favorite band. I must admit, I have not heard very much of Dick Dale. I do believe I heard he is the father of Surf Music.

Dick Dale and Link Wray are two of my heroes. I'm pretty much a sucker for good surf rock tone and those two are the best. Has anyobdy listened to The Mermen? That's some very interesing contemporary instrumental surf rock with excellent lush guitar work. Check 'em out surf fans. Another band to check out if you have not heard them is The Bambi Molesters. Yes, interesting name indeed. What's more interesting is that they are a Croatian surf rock band. They had a song on one of many Ennio Morricone tribute albums I got [this one was called "For a Few Guitars More" and I loved them so I got their album. Excellent surf rock.

I'm bringing my Flip Flop Sparkle Strat for him to autograph. I think that may wind up hanging on my mantle if it comes out good. He's considered the King Of Surf.
There's a little blurb about him here and a cool short interview from 1993 here. He mentions working with Leo Fender to create "the sound" which became surf music. Funny how he describes how he got into playing guitar also.
His Dick Dale Signature Stratocaster is a bit different also...

I just woke up from getting home at 4:00AM and I had to jump on The Fret to let you guys know how the show went.
DICK DALE IS INCREDIBLE! He's such a showman and a super nice guy. The Middle East was packed with ages ranging from 21-90 (mostly 21-39 I'd say) and EVERYONE was digging him. It was really cool to see yonger people respect a true musician.
BOY IS HE LOUD. What a killer guitar tone! The man uses .016-.060s... they look like power lines on his axe. Recordings don't do his sound justice - you really need to hear it in person to appreciate it IMHO.
I was lucky enough to watch from the side of the stage. I got to view Dick up close and personal the whole night. Completely blew me away! Lots of people taped parts of his show so I'll post some youtube links when they surface.
There were about 7 elderly people sitting next to me where I stood the entire show. One of them was a friend he went to school with from 1st to 11th grade (he grew up in Quincy, MA before moving to Cali). He brought her up on stage in the middle of the show and said some touching things about her and the crowd went wild. I guess you had to be there to understand what I'm saying but it was just so cool to see how he still rememberes his friends after all these years.
As soon as the show ended he came over and shook my hand "Hey! Thanks for coming! Nice to meet you - hope you enjoyed the show!". I was like "Ummmm.... YEAH!" A total class act. If Dick comes to town you MUST see him!

Another cool thing about Dick is he stayed after the gig to talk, sign autographs, and take pictures with every last fan who wanted one. The show ended at 1:05AM and when I left at 2:15AM Dick was still out on the floor hanging out with the fans. He was kind enough to autograph a couple of pictures for me.
He did a killer Johnny Cash medley and ended with 3rd Stone From The Sun - surf style - freakin' blew me away!
A new guitar hero of mine for sure!

P.S. Not only does he play lefty, he has his guitar strung as a righty - now that's HARD! His high E is where your low E should be - outrageous!

Sounds like a great show, and an very cool guitar-hero. If Dale is coming to this area [Central Florida] I will be sure to check him out. He is, without question, in the top slot for me as far as surf guitar tone.
