    Default Introduction...

    Howdy, all,

This seems like a great community of folks - glad that Robert pointed the way on his site. Robert's been my intro to on-line guitar communication, as well as someone who has taught me quite a bit through his videos - thanks Robert! I found his sight while looking for reviews of the Squire Telecaster - he sure made it sound good!

I started playing the guitar a few years ago to use in the classroom with my students (we sing every day). Until last summer, I used a borrowed Aria classical, but I finally wanted a steel string, and bought, on very short notice via Ebay, an Art & Lutherie cedar top - I lucked out, it is a lovely guitar. But that started the urge for an electric... you know, that lingering fantasy from high school! My dream electric had always been a tele - not sure why, but I think it has to do with Let It Be and George Harrison (more on that later). So, after Robert's bravura display, I ordered one immediately and have been enjoying it - though I'm not quite sure that it's 'my' sound.

Then came the winter doldrums, and a late night on Ebay, and the 'other' guitar I had always imagined - again, under the influence of Let It Be - a hollow-body ES-335 or similar (only realized later that Lennon's was a Casino or something else). Anyways, there was this beautiful Washburn HB-30 deluxe, with a low bid - "I'll never get it for this price" I told myself - but low and behold, I did... Oh, oh - ANOTHER guitar, and here I can hardly play...! My wife was amused and forgiving...

Then lastly, someone sent me a link to the Music 123 sale, and the then $30. Fullerton strat. Why, hadn't I just seen Robert taking his for a spin a few days before. Yes, I must!; NO, this is ridiculous! the two little guys on my shoulders battled it out for awhile, and then I saw how fast they were selling - last chance! So, now I own three electrics and two acoustics... How embarassing - especially when someone comes over and my wife gives them the whole story (good-naturedly, fortunately).

Most of the time, I play the electrics with headphones through a Digitech RP50 modeling pedal, and when no one is home, a behringer practice amp.

So there you have it - more than you ever would have wanted to know; but perhaps it 'resonates' with some of you folks (ouch! and he ends with a bad pun! Hope you don't kick me out now.)

Welcome, what a great intro! I am glad to hear I inspired you. You've come to the right place - this is a friendly place where you'll get lots of good advice and feedback.

It's now how well you plays that matters - it's enjoying playing that matters! (my 2 cents and no, we're not kicking you out just yet... )

Great intro tj. Glad to have you here with us.
I'm also happy for you that you now have the fretnet GAS problem taken care of. It will make it much easier to concentrate on all the great info on the site.

Cool! Another Tele and Washburn HB-30 player in the crowd Welcome aboard!

What finish do you have on that HB? A young fellow come up to me after our Canada Day gig to comment that I had the suh-weetest lookin' Washburn he's ever seen (my cherry red HB-30). I still contend you can have marginal skill as long as you look cool doing it, and my HB does look cool

Stick around. In addition to great info and discussions about music and guitars, this place is great for GAS, and healthy doses of sarcasm and witty raport.

Welcome to TheFret, TJC. Lemme see, multiple GAS attacks resulting in the purchase of 4 guitars in the past year? Nah, that NEVER happens around here!

BTW, you still need a Les Paul, an SG, a PRS, one of those pointy heavy metal guitars, maybe an Explorer or Flying V, some kind of P-90 guitar for sure, also a.....

Welcome..and yes sir!!! I can relate!! Robert is the cause of most of this!!
A few years back I just had an old acoustic.. Then I started watching Roberts Videos with "cheap" equipment.. it's just a ploy to lure you into the G.A.S....

now I can't stop buying things and still have not progressed in playing...lol!!

Welcome to the place that helps you open your wallet just because!!

    Ummm BTW,
A Casino is a true Hollow Body compared to the others which have a center block (that right guys?).. and a must have... P90's and all.. you can get the sunburst for the early years..or the natural for the revolution years... Oh..then one with Bigsby for harrison model... and to think.. Paul actually had one first... hmmm.. wait I don't have one yet... "opens another browser window to music123"

    Welcome tjcurtin1.

For decades I was happy to own just one acoustic, one electric, and one amp.

Then for another decade, I was happy to own one acoustic, one les paul, one strat, a hollowbody, and two amps.

Then I found a beat up old acoustic in a thrift store with a sweet tone and a price I couldn't resist. The next week I got another hollowbody, and soon afterwards I started getting all the gear I could possibly afford. Lesson: The more you get, the more you want!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! It's nice to be here. Let's see, I've got the gist of a GAS attack, but haven't figured out the acronym yet... Guitar Addict Syndrome, perhaps??

Trev, my HB-30 is a 'deluxe' model (HB-30D), of which I have only seen one other for sale. Essentially, it is an HB-35 with an HB-30 neck - the body has the figured maple all around, and binding on the heel of the neck. Mine is a beautiful amber yellow color. It is quite striking and, yes, cool to my way of thinking! It has a beautiful sound, too - lots of different tones and possibilities which I am only beginning to explore.

I also put GFS pickups in the Fullerton - I notice that someone else here did the same, but I got the Vintage versions. The original pickups didn't sound bad (heck, just listen to Robert!), but they were a bit hot for my taste.

As for the playing - well, it's getting better, and I agree that it's about enjoying playing, whatever the instrument.

    Ted

GAS = Gear, or Guitar (as the case may be) Aquisition Syndrome. i.e. the insatiable need to run out and purchase something...anything guitar related. Usually onset by reading posts here (and elsewhere). Gotta Have It / You KNOW You Want It...

I haven't seen a "Deluxe" HB-30, but then again, my HB-30/CH was supposed to be a HB-35. I didn't think the "30" was available with the cherry red finish according to Washburn's website. That's OK, the 30 is just fine, and who really needs gold hardware and block inlays anyway Other than the cosmetics, it's pretty much the same guitar.
