what would you all do if someone joined this forum and played like they knew everything there is to know about guitar? where I moderate we have such a village idiot so what or how would this forum handle it if they did get by Robert who has a heads up on them. mmmmm

I assume that if someone was projecting that they new 'everything' and didn't sooner or later they will get called on their knowledge and be exposed. Then you'll get a whole bunch of hornets protecting the nest scenario. Bzzzz.

    Huh?

There are alot of good players here.. with their opinions.
they all aint like me, not good but still opinionated..lol

And even newbies at guitar like me, are allowed opinions here..

Robert will be the first to tell you.. even he is still learning things..

    It's a life long travel...

This forum is for everyone from what I have seen....

    most everyone will support..
Some will ignore... some will except..
and some will just poke around..:

But mostly, I never see insults directly...
not with ill intent at least..

Which makes thefret.net a great place..

what makes him the village idiot if he does know it all?
is he insulting? or non supportive?
does he just come across straight forward maybe?
is the other forum thin skinned and hateful to newcomers?
ignore, works the best if he ruffles your feathers.
    in my humble opinion.

the guy is just not opinionated he has a bad case of attitude.
puts others down that he feels do not play as well as he thinks they should.
puts up almost explanations one needs to actually decipher if possible
which most times are not possible and cannot spell anything either correct.
not that everyone does including me we tend to let that part be as it is a worldwide forum that does cover this big blue marble.
to make matters even worse he is a moderator(Edit:Was).even though that was done by mistake.admin there fails to see through him. however for the most part those that have been there awhile know to just ignore his rants.
myself included.needless confrontation comes up which is ignored.

he gives out bad and false information too but actually believes what he posts to be true.we(moderators) there see him for what he is or thinks he is - a know it all that knows little but enough to be dangerous to a beginning guitarist.Yes the Musical journey is a life long one this many of us already know.still learning too so Robert is dead on in that respect - did I mention he shows none to others. happen to like thefret.net too

that other forum has been around many years newcomers are always welcomed alternatively if people should get out of line others will not hesitate to set them straight.it is basically a good place that does help others and has for a long long time.just curious what kind of response this would get here not to mention Robert did ask I start a thread for technical purposes.in case anyone wonders or cares I've been playing guitar four decades now but as stated still learning

I dunno, we'd probably confuse him with weirdness & fun.

I don't see any problem with someone being a know-it-all curmudgeon in general. It takes all kinds.

If he was busy posting ad hominen, ad naseum, and ad infinitum, I'm sure that first there would be a lot of really stupid, funny, & odd jokes & general ad pokituem:

Interspersed with ignoring him & probably the hornet's nest thing too.

    But what do I know?

I would imagine that his statements would be challenged if it was clear that he didn't know what he was talking about on a subject. Then he'd probably be ignored. If he was belligerent, rude, obnoxious, and generally disruptive to the forum, I'd imagine that he would be warned about his behavior. If that didn't work and he continued to disrupt the forum, I'd imagine that Robert would consider banning him. I'm not trying to speak for Robert, but I think it's clear that he likes this forum to be friendly and respectful.

Everyone has opinions, but that doesn't excuse rude behavior in expressing them. Since everyone here enjoys the friendly banter and exchange of information in a respectful, considerate manner, I don't think he'd last long (if he didn't just self-eliminate on his own). I don't think there is anyone here now who would willfully, and knowingly insult or disrespect another member.

I would try and ignore him.

I ran into one guy on another forum who would run down my video lessons and being "pointless" and "Boring" and would proceeed to run what ever I had to say in other threads into the ground (unless he needed a supporting opinion running someone else down, in which case he would cite some nugget of wisdom from one of my earlier malinged posts).

I tried to interact reasonable with him and debate him on his "opinions" but it eventually got out of control and I ended up looking as much an idiot as him...he was later banned for porn bombing the forum....

Anyhow...I would make a point of staying out of his way and let the moderators deal with him if he became problem enough that he crossed the line ....

Bloozcat is correct. Our forum has rules, and members who break them will get a warning. If that doesn't help, they are banned.

It sounds like your forum need rules. If you have rules already, there needs to be a system for dealing with those who break the rules, and then someone to take action when rules are broken. (I sound like the mean Warden, don't I? )
The Law of Gravity is nonsense. No such law exists. If I think I float, and you think I float, then it happens.

Everyone is different, everyone has opinions and is free to express them. Some people just thrive on stirring up trouble and yanking your chain.
They love it when they can engage you in a pis*ing match. He probably loves the fact we're talking about him over here.
I'd ignore him, until he crosses the line with offensive remarks, threats, or anything else that's objectionable to the forum. Can we say "decorum".
That's what makes this board so cool. It's one of the most friendly places to visit on the net.

So far everyone is correct oldguy.I think perhaps we both know the person in question.

    Robert
The forum does have rules the guy just gets close to crossing the line on any of them.moderators know to ignore him. as do many members unfortunately admin there really does not moderate but does pay attention to his moderators issues(except for the person spoken of) who as stated comes close to crossing any lines so admin lets them off and does like the rest of us there...pay no attention to them/him.last I worked with admin there they said he has been asking questions since 2003 before becoming a mod and has not been given any satisfaction of an answer to anything even since he was made a moderator (huge mistake on our part) there.not even other mods acknowledge his being there.we all try to ignore the guy being most know he is not an accurate source to rely on as other moderators there are.I happen to be one but also do not lay claim to knowing everything about anything. we suspect he is a google maniac and relies on the web more than actual experience.had I known I would not have ever opened this can of worms up here.please everyone accept my apology ahead of time.as stated before I like this forum very much as well.Thank You all in advance -rawk on

I've seen the village idiots on a few boards. Unless they're really over the top or seriously breaking the TOS, it's best to ignore them. Sooner or later, they'll stick both feet in their mouth and someone will call them out on it. Most tend to calm down or disappear when that happens.

That, or they're just one mouse click away from being history.................

I have to agree with the suggestion of ignoring the person. It seems people like that thrive on the arguing and like to "one up" their opponent. Ignore them and they will get bored and leave.

Now here's a perfect example. I have another forum member who is attacking me without any provocation. I will ignore him and eventually he will go away. However, I will PM Robert just to assure myself that the problem will be addressed.

Now let's all go back to adding posts and maybe he will get the message. Shhhh, here he comes now.
