SRV did use vintage-y pickups, but he also bought the highest capacitance cables he could find and then ran them through one (or two) Tube Screamers and one (or two) wahs. Suddenly the vintage sparkly tone isn't so vintage-y or sparkly anymore.

I'm one of those weirdos who really doesn't like vintage single-coil sound. I think it sounds thin and anemic. And noisy. But obviously there's a large segment of the population (yes, perhaps even the vast majority) who disagree with me. To each, their own.

Amphen: Jet City JCA22H and JCA12S cab, Carvin X-60 combo, Acoustic B20
Effecten: "Thesis 96" Overdrive/Boost (aka DVM OD2), Hardwire DL-8 Digital Delay/Looper, DigiTech Polara Reverb, DigiTech EX-7 Expression Factory and CF-7 Chorus Factory, Danelectro CF-1 Cool Cat Fuzz

You're unlikely to be classified as a "mainstream" guy there, Rev. Except maybe by other heavy metal Lutheran clergy guitarists....

Yes, I'm a part of a small, horribly persecuted minority.

And I should be clearer too. I'm not a fan of vintage Strat tone. Vintage Tele tone is an entirely different animal. I've always found that to be ballsier.

    Now where's my "11" switch . . .

[ . Personally, I think that SRV's tones were about 80% in his fingers,
I totally agree with this and about everone else's tone also.I saw a short vid where Santana (Carlos) wanted to try Eddie's set up (Van Halen)well he sounded like, yep you guessed it Carlos. It really blows my mind sometimes.Sumi : :
