A tribute to a dear friend and a great man!

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. I didn't have the chance to go see Mike today, but word at the Courthouse is that he was able to sit up and eat breakfast this morning, and they think he'll be strong enough for surgery by Friday. They were very concerned that there might be some brain damage, but so far it's looking positive. He's recognizing and visiting with the people who see him, though he is having some problems with walking.

Oh, and he's still upset that his doctor won't bring him a cigarette or a beer.:

i'll be going over for another trip tomorrow.

he needs peeps/support right now. he's an incredible person, as is his wife, and i am going to be strong for him and wanda.

today, when i got back from my lesson, shiner and i donned our jackets and walked over to the hospital.

went up to the room,

and joy of joys. he was sitting up in an armchair, fully cognizant/aware, and his face lit up like a candle when he saw us.

we spent an hour there with him and Wanda, and Mike just had me in stitches. he and shiner were playing off of each other, cracking jokes, doing impressions, and just sharing good memories.

he has more stuff ahead of him, but that's for another day.

today i had my friend back, laughing and healthy.

he caught a touch of pneumonia, on top of everything else, early in the game. we have our fingers crossed for wed on the going home thing, although there will be more stuff he has to handle in upcoming months. their families have converged, in waves, from all over in the last 8 days... i had the distinct pleasure of meeting some of them.
