Wow!! What a great Christmas present!
A few weeks back Sunvalleylaw started a thread about gear purchased on Black Friday sales. I got myself a strat style body from Warmoth. A few months earlier I had purchased a neck to replace the one on an old MIJ strat that had some really bad fret wear. A neck seemed like a more cost effective option than a re-fret. I went a little crazy and ordered something I didn't know if I would like. It was a one piece construction made of Goncalo Alves, a wood I had never heard of. It's a waxy wood and needs no sealer or finish coat. I got the fatback neck profile and it's a hefty chunk of wood indeed. Stainless steel frets, play like butter and not harsh sounding in the least, staggered Schaller locking tuners, and a teflon impregnated nut. It gave that old start a sustain it never had before.
As it turned out the neck felt so awesome I kept thinking it needed a body of it's own. I got a chambered black korina body, gave it a Tru-Oil finish, and loaded it with Klein Epic '57 pickups, an RS vintage wiring kit, and a Callaham bridge. Man do I love the sound of this thing!

Thanks Guys. I'm really stoked about it. I have a few strats but never found the 'one' for me. This one sure feels like it's IT.
Beside the neck feeling so right for me, the sound quality is just what I would have hoped for. The combination of the chambered body, the fat solid neck and the Klein pickups combine to make a really versatile guitar. It's very sensitive to playing attack, it's really articulate when lightly played, and it honks pretty good without sounding harsh or overly bright. The RS kit pots are useful for their entire rotation, no flat or dull spots and no quick drops in tone or volume. I installed the optional .047 cap across the volume pot for a treble bleed and it works really well. Our band played out last Saturday and I used it all night.
I never assembled a guitar from parts before and I didn't know what I was going to encounter along the way. I have to compliment Warmoth. Both the neck and the body were extremely well finished. I didn't have to do any sanding at all. I suppose I could have, but it would have only been to make myself feel like I did something as both arrived dead perfect. The fit of neck to body was absolutely perfect. Warmoth tells you not to slide the neck in from the top of the neck route but to put it straight in. It popped in with gentle pressure like putting Lego toys together. I didn't even need to adjust the truss rod or do a setup ~
Nice! Looks like it is ready to play some swampy blues!
