Falling back in love with the bass
I admittedly have not been playing much guitar or bass recently. I decided to pick up my bass and mess around again. I remembered why I enjoy it so much. I taught myself the bass line to "Spirits in the Material World"--my favorite Police song. It's a classic example of a relatively simple yet cool bass line.
I've also been trying to come up with different ways to play with my fingers, but compensate for the loss of three fingertips. I found it easier to play over the bridge pickup instead of the neck because the strings don't move as much there. I have used my pinkie to use basically a one-finger technique. I've also tried the thumb-only technique but that's not as flexible as I might like. Obviously I can play with a pick and often do, but I'd like to figure something out.
I really enjoy all the different tones I can get out of my bass with the EMG P and MM soapbars and three band active electronics. The only issue I have is that it weighs a ton, especially for a swamp ash body. I've always heard that swamp ash is supposed to be lighter. I guess mine is the exception that proves the rule.
