Well, figured that buying a second hand guitar that someones played for 7 years, it could probably do with a clean. Body wasnt bad, but the fretboard was very worn. Or so I thought. I was advised to give it a good clean down.

I wasnt even sure this was rosewood at first, and thought the marks were worn parts of the wood!

Took me quite a while, using rags, old picks, more rags, and a lot of elbow grease to get the 7 years worth of hand cheese off!

Once it was all clean, gave it a going over with very fine steel wool to lift the worst of it, and give the frets a clean too. Quick lemon oil treatment and we're away!

Not a big project/job, but it looks a damn sight better!

You can still see the lighter tone of the wood near the frets, but I read once about being careful of oiling the wood near the fret, as it may soften and the frets may loosen; didnt want to go too close!

Itll soak in more over the next few days...just be sure to re-apply each time you change strings, youll wanna anyways though.

edit: edit: BTW Id rock whatchu got...I like it as is. Its the back of it...add to it...maybe some day you will refine the technique and youll want to do the front?
How much did you pay for it anyways? Did the Peavey come with it?
 
Paid £85 on ebay for it, roughly equivalent to $160-$170. Got the Peavey before from a guy local to me, it had packed up so I bought that for about $40 IIRC. Didnt take much to fix it, and now it works really well - though gives a slight hum when the transtube is cranked. Not sure if thats normal, but you dont hear it when youre playing :)

Wasnt me who did the design, was the previous owner. Good in a way, has made me think about adding a design into the paint using the spray gun and stencil card, then lacquering over the top. Also put a few people off on ebay I think, so helped me get it for cheap :D
 
Cool! That fretboard looks so much better. Doesn't it feel good to put a little effort into something and it turns out well..especially when you get it at an insane price? :AOK:
 
Yeah i love doing stuff like that (which has led to me resurrecting several scrapyard destined cars from the dead!). Ill be on the lookout for not-quite-loved guitars from now on, deffo :)

Followed the link you sent me Steve, and removed the trem with the strings still attached to get to the board. Knife edges have absolutely no wear, its like new! :)

Should be getting a trem arm tomorrow, and another wall hanger so it can sit beside my PRS.

Already draughting up a design for the front of it, Im thinking white pearl paint on the purple should look really good. Watch this space ;)
 
Great job. :dude: I had a similar task in front of me on a 30 year old Washburn acoustic I recently bought. I thought the fret board was ebony since it was so dark. While searching thru the misses cleaning supplies looking for something mild I found a container of Murphy's oil wipes that she uses on the cabinets. Boy did they turn a black fret board to rosewood. Amazing what a little tlc can do for an instrument.
 
Nice job STG. What a great feeling when you can personalize a guitar or should I say unpersonalized and then personalize....Oh...you know what I mean. I love this stuff:bravo:

The pattern on the back reminds me of the old Mountain album covers.

Nice job, now where did I put that cleaner, my cleaning is long over due....
